Why Pokémon on Switch has me super excited

Nintendo Switch

So this piece is going to be filled to the brim of gushing for an upcoming title on Switch, so bear with me. Nintendo announced that a new Pokémon game is planned for the Switch, and not a tournament game or spin-off, but part of the true RPG series we’ve all come to know and love. That has me so excited for this incredible portable console.

Game Freak later confirmed the developer is working on an all-new Pokémon game for the Switch, but we’re still some ways off from seeing a trailer, let alone the release. But this is the real deal. The Pokémon game on Switch we’ve all be waiting for. I have little reason to put the console down already, aside from when it needs a rest and charge, but with a huge RPG released in the Pokémon universe, it’s going to get even better for Nintendo’s portable platform.

Nintendo could have played it safe, but chose to go all out with a new game.

Interestingly, Nintendo didn’t have to work with Game Freak on a whole new title. Pokémon Sun and Moon aren’t old games by any means and they were really well received by critics and the community. I enjoyed them too and a release on Switch would make sense to get something out the door to cash in on the brand while a new game is in development. But no, Nintendo wants to do this right. And that’s okay with me seeing this is will be initial launch on Switch.

The last two games in the Pokémon RPG series were rolled out on the aging 3DS platform. The Switch packs more of a punch than the 3DS and will allow for not only better graphics but also much more in terms of gameplay. Game Freak will have more specs to work with and the ability to cram even more content into the final package.

And with season passes and DLC (actually worth the price) making the rounds on Switch, we will undoubtedly see post-launch support with future content and social events. The latter is already present in Sun and Moon, allowing players to band together and complete challenges.

For now, we’ll have to hold out and await updates from Nintendo and Game Freak. Word is, both parties are looking at late 2018, early 2019 for release. What are you most looking forward to in a Pokémon RPG on Switch?
