There are some fantastic games out there on PC, many of them part of the strategy genre. This section of the industry has been around since the beginning and spans medieval times to space-faring factions and everything in-between. Here’s a collection of the best strategy games on PC.
Paradox Interactive scored gold when the company released Stellaris on PC. The game has been updated a few times with free updates and expansion packs that all added new content (and more recently … completely switched things up).
Putting the player in charge of not only building up a civilization and dominating the universe but also going on a journey of exploration, uncovering secrets, anomalies and meeting new species among the stars. One of the best 4X space games, period.
The Civilization series has been around for decades. Allowing players to choose a civilization and start from the ground up. Kicking things off in the dark age, you’re tasked with taking said populous to the golden age, forming alliances and taking down enemies in the process.
Galactic Civilizations III
Stardock isn’t a new brand when it comes to space games and Galactic Civilizations III takes everything that made the first two games so good and improves on the formula. It was off to a rather rocky start at release but is slowly becoming everything that fans of the series wanted.
Much like Stellaris, “Gal Civ” allows the player to build a mighty empire but in a turn-based environment, giving you ample time to decide on what to do next before the enemy has time to react. There’s also the fact it’s possible to build custom ships and even import designs from the community.
Total War: Warhammer 2
Sega allowed Creative Assembly to do some wonderful things with the Total War formula and the world of Warhammer. It all came together well in the first instalment but more factions were to come in this excellent sequel, alongside new features. Not only that but if you own the first game as well it’s possible to enjoy a combined campaign.
The main game is turn-based but when it comes to battles, everything is in real-time with gorgeous environments to scatter thousands of dead bodies and busted equipment.
Sins of a Solar Empire
Another Stardock title makes our list for good reasons. Sins of a Solar Empire is a gem of a real-time strategy game based in space. Imagine Age of Empires but with planets, diplomacy, tech advancements, lasers and capital ships that can level up. There’s a ton of action to enjoy.
Though the game is starting to show its age, SSE remains an absolute classic and should be in the possession of anyone who claims to be a fan of space strategy games.
